Evita Huai-ching Liu, PhD

Hello! I am Evita. I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College London, School of Management. I received my PhD in Business Administration and Management from Bocconi University. I was also a visiting PhD student at Imperial College Business School.
My research sits at the intersection of leadership and communication. I am particularly interested in understanding how leaders navigate challenging situations, such as during prolonged crises, when experiencing chronic stereotype threat, or when answering difficult questions. Specifically, I address research questions like:
-
How can leaders communicate effectively during global pandemics, economic recessions, and grinding military conflicts?
-
How do minority women leaders present themselves (verbally and non-verbally) in male-dominated leadership roles?
-
How do leaders engage in two-way communication with stakeholders when questions are hostile and their needs are diverse?
I used various data sources, including political data (congressional records), corporate data (earnings calls), social media big data (Twitter/X, Stack Overflow, TED Talks, Mumsnet), and lab data. I adopted a multimethod approach, including a narrative literature review (already published at The Leadership Quarterly), natural language processing (NLP), micro facial expression analysis (FaceReader), and laboratory experiments.
Prior to joining academia, I worked as an HR specialist at L'Oréal Paris headquarters after completing an MSc degree in Strategic Management at HEC Paris. I have a passion for learning and researching languages (obviously!), and speak Mandarin, English, French, and Italian — the last just well enough to order food. I am also very proud to have been born and raised in my lovely hometown, Taiwan.
